More frequently than we’d like to admit, a patient walks into our office for an appointment and tells us that they are not optimistic that we’ll be able to help them. They come in with this mindset because another provider has told them that there is little that can be done for their spinal condition. Not only is it disheartening to hear another provider speak this way to a patient, oftentimes we find that this statement is unequivocally false. Below, we explain how we can help you find solutions if you’ve been told that your back pain isn’t treatable.
My Back Pain Is Untreatable
We’ve never met a patient whose back pain was untreatable. Now, treatable and curable are two different terms, but just because a spinal condition can’t be completely reversed or eliminated doesn’t mean that treatment isn’t worth it. Even if your back pain can’t be completely cured, treatment can oftentimes significantly reduce symptoms.
For many, that symptom reduction is extremely important. It can help to reduce pain and increase function, which can make individuals more active, helping people keep symptoms at bay for longer. Similarly, symptom reduction can help a person remain more independent and with a higher quality of life. Those two factors are very important, because nobody wants to shy away from activities they love because of back pain. We can’t guarantee that we can cure your back pain, but we’re confident that if you let us assess the issue and set you up with an individualized treatment plan that we can help to lessen your discomfort.
There are a number of different reasons why an individual may have been told that there is nothing that can be done for their back condition. We’re going to look at some of the common reasons another provider may feel this way, and how we work to overcome these obstacles.
- Too Complex – The spine is a complex system, and when a rare or severe condition develops, it can make the problem very hard to treat. Some providers don’t want to take on this challenge because they know it won’t be easy. We gravitate towards these complex cases and want to help you find relief no matter how difficult it will be to treat.
- Too Busy – Some patients may have a tough time finding relief if their provider is too busy to really take the time to get to know them and their pain condition. Quickly writing a prescription and offering little tangible advice isn’t going to help you find long-term relief. Dr. Jackman takes as much time as necessary with each patient to ensure he completely understands their condition so that he can develop the most effective treatment plan.
- Misdiagnosed – Others are struggling to find relief from their back pain because they are treating the wrong underlying condition as a result of a misdiagnosis. If you want to have another professional take a closer look at your spine and provide their opinion, reach out to Dr. Jackman and the team at the Midwest Spine & Brain Institute.
Don’t let a provider tell you that your back pain is untreatable, because we’re confident that we can help decrease symptoms and increase function, even if we can’t completely cure you of your discomfort. We’ll do everything in our power to help you keep making progress. For more information, or for help with your spinal issue, reach out to Dr. Jackman’s office today at (651) 430-3800.
